Safety often is an issue that condo and single-family home residents alike do not think about until they absolutely have to. And by then, it sometimes can be too late. Some people make the argument they do not want to think much about implementing safety measures because it makes them feel like they are planning for the worst, or expecting something bad to happen. But nothing could be further from the truth. As with many other things, a little safety planning goes a long way.

1. Check your smoke alarms. Hill House Showflat residents can be lulled into a false sense of security because their buildings have fire alarms and smoke detectors in the hallway. That is great if there is a fire that is large enough to trip them. But what if a fire starts in your unit? Check the batteries in your smoke alarm on an annual basis, and check every month to make sure they work.

2. Do not allow strangers into the building. Many condo buildings have security systems and require residents to use a special key or code to gain access. People who do not live there must be let in by someone who does. So while it may seem like a nice gesture to let someone in, especially if they say they are visiting someone, it is a good idea to simply let the person they know let them in.
